Herbal Action: anti-inflammatory, demulcent, laxative

Indications:

  • Mucilage is soothing to dry, irritated mucous membranes in the respiratory, digestive and urinary tracts

  • Gentle laxative that can be taken longterm

  • Topically soothing to burns, poison ivy, eczema, rashes,  psoriasis, and necrotic tissue

  • Analog for slippery elm bark

Preferred Preparations: cold infusion, syrup

Taste: slightly earthy

Contraindications: generally regarded as safe

Origin Story: used in the Middle Ages as a gargle to relieve mouth and gum infections
