Affinity: lungs, respiratory system

Herbal Action: antiviral, antispasmodic, carminative, diaphoretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, nervine

Indications:

  • Beneficial at the onset of a cold that presents with a low grade fever

  • Calms coughs associated with asthma, bronchitis and the late stages of respiratory illness, specifically wet coughs.

Preferred Preparations: infusion, oxymel, syrup, tincture

Taste: bitter + similar to licorice

Contraindications: not for use during pregnancy

Origin Story: after experiencing an improvement in his own health, Holy Roman Emperor Charles I ordered that hyssop should be planted in all medicinal gardens
